What is Fairtrade?

A Fairtrade product means that the producers behind the item (i.e. farmers) are being paid a fair wage, are able to work in safe conditions and has a verified social impact.

When you buy products with any of the FAIRTRADE Marks, you support farmers and workers, as they improve their lives and their communities.

Key benefits of Fairtrade

Fairtrade changes lives by changing trade. The Fairtrade certification organization is 50% owned by farmers meaning these standards are informed by the workers it directly impacts.

Fairtrade works directly with businesses and consumers to ensure fair, sustainable and ethical supply chains for the products we consumer. The international Fairtrade system represents the world's largest and most recognized independent certification system, representing over 1.7 million farmers and workers in 73 countries.

The Fairtrade Premium

Another advantage to choosing Fairtrade is the Fairtrade Premium. For every product sold, an additional Fairtrade Premium is given back to communities, allowing them to invest into various projects, including in the health, education, clean drinking water, and the insurance sectors.

Cocoa

Many enjoy the taste of cocoa as a sweet treat, however we might not be aware of the far from equitable working conditions, mostly in West Africa, under which cocoa is farmed. Fairtrade practices are working to stop child labour and unjust wages, and improve working conditions for cocoa workers across the globe.

Coffee

With price volatility, extreme weather conditions, and with an unstable workforce, coffee farmers are left to struggle with low incomes. To combat this, Fairtrade Minimum Price is instituted so farmers have a crucial safety net against sudden price drops.

Bananas

Foodland supports Fairtrade's dedication to improving banana workers' lives. Part of this dedication is the Fairtrade Base Wage. The Fairtrade Base Wage is set at 70% of the living wage of the country they work in, banana farm workers will receive this base wage regardless of the country's legal minimum wage.

Flowers

Flower workers and flower farms benefit from hands-on support and training from the local Fairtrade producer network. Fairtrade also supports environmentally friendly flower cultivation. Find Fairtrade flowers in select Foodland and IGA locations.
